According to reports the airline was in deep financial debt and had been looking for a backer for months, with talks between Icelandair and a US firm broken off in the last few days.
The carrier, which started flights in 2012, has 11 aircraft and flew from Edinburgh, Gatwick and Stansted in the UK to destinations that include New York, Boston, Montreal, Reykjavik and Toronto.
